Lasting Peace

Peace, defined as the absence of hostilities, is a promise that was demonstrated on the cross when Jesus ended the division between Jew and Gentile. His sacrifice as the Lamb of God fulfilled all the types, rituals and sacrifices entrusted to the Jewish nation that pointed towards this culminating event. In Ephesians chapter 2, the apostle Paul teaches that this event is when God established the peace that you, as a believer, can claim and experience even today. The historical record of Jew and Gentile now becoming one united people through Christ gives you the assurance that the hostilities between you and God are forever removed. Lasting peace, as a direct result, allows you to live confidently amidst the chaos of sin in a broken world.

Aliens No More

No one likes to be left out. We all have experienced the idea of being left out of something in one way or another. When we read scriptures like Ephesians 2:11-13 and see words like alienated it conjures up for us images of rejection and exclusion that we have experienced in the past. Naturally as non-Jews (and even Jews that don't believe in Christ), we are alienated from the people of God and excluded from His family by our sin. The good news of the cross is that Jesus has put an end to sin for those who trust in His sacrifice because Jesus made the blood payment for us. Those who believe on the Lord Jesus and have been purified by the blood of the perfect Lamb of God are now reconciled to Him forever, and are no longer aliens but citizens of the heavenly kingdom.

Undeniably So

The construction of the Greek text demonstrates the certainty of your eternal security in this passage. The verbs and their tenses in Ephesians 2:5-10 bring out a much richer and deeper meaning to this teaching not quite evident in the English language. The verbs “made alive”, “raised up”, and “seated” have the prefix “together with” built into each word to point out that your Christian experience is inextricably tied to Christ. The aorist tense, unique to the Greek language, expresses the kind of action rather than time to underscore the timeless, matter-of-fact truth of the verbs. The use of the perfect tense as in “you have been saved” indicates completed past action (eg Christ’s sacrifice) and present results (eg peace and eternal security). The security of your eternal destiny is undeniably so.

Saved from What?

If you have not trusted in the perfect sacrifice of Christ for the redemption of your sins, you are dead. Just being here, just being human makes you dead—but God makes us alive! Because of the life He lived, Christ proved Himself to be the perfect sacrifice for sins. Because of the death He died, Christ fulfilled His work as the only mediator between God and man. Because of the life He now lives, Christ has assured us of the hope that we will also rise again. God makes us alive together with Christ! If you believe the gospel, you will surely be saved; just as surely as Christ has risen from the grave, you will also arise a new person. By the wonderful, amazing grace of God, you have been saved from death—you’ve been made alive.

Abide

As a sinful, human being, you have the tendency to move away from your relationship with God. Jesus’ teaching to his disciples in the upper room addresses this very issue. You are to “abide” in him as he abides in you. It is a permanent condition like your permanent address. You do this with the assurance that you are already clean—like Jesus’ disciples were pronounced during that last supper. The analogy of branches attached to the vine underscore the life-and-death significance of abiding, and so does the pruning and being cast into the fire of branches that do not bear fruit. A life having full joy is the natural outcome of this permanent relationship.

Come Back

It may seem logical to think of moving forward, especially at the beginning of another new year. But the Bible also teaches that you should come back—return to having a relationship with God like he had designed when he created the first couple. The story of the Prodigal Son demonstrates that even with your best intentions, your tendency is to wander off and take over your life. It is so natural for you to trust in your own strength when you actually are making a mess of your life. You don’t have to reach rock bottom and loss everything before you realize what’s going on. God always waits in anticipation of your return. This deep love he has for you is what will keep drawing you back into a relationship with him.

Stop and Listen

This is the first installment of the series, “Turning Over a New Leaf God’s Way”. New Year’s resolutions fall short because they are usually based on human ideas. Instead of coming up with your own personal ‘To Do’ list, it makes more sense to “Stop and Listen” just like Samuel did. One night, he heard his name called out and assumed that he knew it was priest Eli calling. He finally stopped doing what came naturally and stopped to listen—listen with the intention of obeying God’s instructions. Just like it was in the nation of Israel during the days of Samuel, we are living in a time of moral decay and spiritual famine. This makes it even more crucial to trust in God’s leading and not what you think.

John the Baptist's Encounter

Everyone is unique and different. As a believer, your life experience is also unique and different from everyone else. This calls for a personalized, highly-customized ‘training program’ to fit you exactly. God uses every aspect of your life experience to teach, mold, and shape you for a unique purpose in his grand plan of redemption. This is your unique, one-of-a-kind training. Just like he chose John the Baptist even before birth for the role of preparing the people for the coming Messiah, he also chose you to prepare his way into the hearts of those around you. You may not have a diet of locust and wild honey living in the wilderness, but God is preparing you just the same through everything you are experiencing through your own ‘wilderness’ experience.

The Magi's Encounter

The circumstances that led the wise men from the East to Bethlehem demonstrate a vital aspect of the Christian experience that is often overlooked. We can have all of the information in the world front of us: every argument, proof, and scriptural support for the existence of God. But except the Spirit of God move in the hearts of unbelievers, these things will avail nothing. The religious leaders of the day had all the evidence of a coming Messiah but failed to believe and be moved by God’s Spirit. In contrast to that, the secular scholars of the day sought out the truth of the One born in a manger through the natural and were obedient to the supernatural. Like the wise men, you must search for truth, believe, and then act on it.

Joseph's Encounter Part 2

In today’s economy, there is nothing that is for sure—your job, housing, or even relationships—except to rely fully on the divine for guidance and direction. This sermon actually covers three additional encounters Joseph had with the angel that demonstrate at least 5 lessons that have to do with trusting in God completely. 1) God warns of unseen danger; 2) anticipate the next move; 3) follow his instructions; 4) it’s okay to be afraid; and 5) get back into the Word. Joseph manifested his human tendencies of doubt and fear, but also submitted to God’s guidance every step of the way. As a believer, if you trust him with your salvation, you can also trust him with your life.
